Ryedale Folk Museum had the pleasure of loaning some objects for the making of

Wuthering Heights by Andrea Arnold.

Its in the Cinema's now!! so go see it and look out for us in the credits!

We provided a range of general household and agricultural items.

Here you can see some of the items we leant out including the stool (made by Kevin the Manager), griddle and pit hook.

A few more items they borrowed including our dough trough, spice jars, butter churn and much more.

We also leant out a number of agricultural items seen in the film including a drenching horn, sycthe, branding irons and leg hook to name a few.

BEST CHRISTMAS WEEKEND EVER!!!!

We finished the Ryedale Folk Museum season with a wonderful Christmas Weekend Celebration!

We opened up our doors for the weekend with free entry and plenty of festive cheer.

We had record breaking visitors and would like to thank everyone who braved the cold weather to come.

We would also like to say a thank you to Ampleforth Community Children's Choir and Kirkbymoorside Primary School choir and band that came and sang, they sounded great and really added to the Christmas atmosphere.

The weekend wouldn't have been successful without the hard work and support from our staff and volunteers who gave up their time to make this Christmas Weekend the best ever! From baking mince pies and providing raffle prizes to helping kids with crafts in the Study Centre, so I must say a BIG THANK YOU for all their hard work.

Britain is at War, there is a Tory Government and the system of Governance is changing.

In February King George the IIIrd was pronounced ‘unfit’ to rule having descended into madness. His son George the Prince of Wales has been declared sovereign by proxy. He rules as king in all but title. So begins ‘The Regency’. However his extravagant lifestyle and spending continue to make him unpopular as is the Tory Government which has made him Regent. Led by Spencer Perceval, (In 1812 to become the only British Prime Minister to be assassinated.....yet?), the Tory Government is notable only for is lack of senior statesmen. Taxation is rising to pay for the war.

The War with Napoleon’s France continues. This year the Royal Navy has again defeated a French Fleet at the Battle of Lisa on March 13th. Whilst Napoleon himself fights the armies of Russia and Austria in central Europe a succession of his Marshalls lead armies in Spain and Portugal against the Anglo Portuguese Army under Sir Arthur Wellesley, later Duke of Wellington. They have recently been defeated at the Battle of Albuera on May 16th. Portugal is clear from French occupation and the British Army is setting the conditions to commence clearing Spain of its ‘French pestilence’.

The 68th Regiment

The 68th has been recovering from the disastrous expedition to Walcheren in 1809 and has finally returned to fighting condition.

In early June the 68th sailed from Portsmouth to Join the British Army in the Peninsular. They have left behind a depot in Sussex, and recruiting parties throughout the country, scouring for recruits for the Regiment to be trained as elite Light Infantrymen.

One such party is moving through Ryedale en- route to Scarborough and Hull, enlisting likely lads for adventure in Spain and Portugal, to serve with Honour for King George and their country. Come and meet them today and perhaps ‘list for the life of a soldier’ and take the Kings Shilling.

Harrison Project to be featured in BBC Magazine

Stang End Long House was turned into a photographic studio for a special shoot last Saturday. The Harrison Project is to be featured in the September issue of BBC Homes and Antiques Magazine. Stang End was a wonderfully atmospheric setting for items from the Harrison collection - even our amateur photos looked good ! To see the much better professional pictures look out for the magazine which will come out in August.

Courses included blacksmithing, mangle print making, proddy hearts, creative embroidery, felt making and much more.

The Kirkbymoorside Camera Club Exhibition at the Museum will be closed from Friday 27th May - Monday 30th May inclusive as the Manor House is being used by the Ryedale Folk Weekend Festival. The exhibition will re-open again on Tuesday 31st May.

The Members' Monochrome part of the show has now finished, but Ryedale View with fantastic photographs from around the local area continues from 31 May in the Manor House.

So make sure you have time to come and see this amazing exhibition before it closes at the end of June!

Allied Forces Movement Control Northern Division - Annual Mess Luncheon

On Sunday 27th March I was lucky enough to have been invited as representative of Ryedale Folk Museum to the AFMC annual mess luncheon in Pickering. I was invited as 'guest of honour' and enjoyed wonderful hospitality and a delicious three course meal!

AFMC have been working with Ryedale Folk Museum for some years now and have helped to make Junes 1940s weekend event a really wonderful feature on the museums calendar. This years event 4th -5th June will feature re-enactments, activities and more. There will also be an evening 1940s village hall dance with live performance from Miss Marina Mae. Tickets for the evening are available now, see the website for details or give the museum a call.

I would like to thank AFMC for all their help and support during our events and for all their wonderful contributions over the years.

Re-instating of the Folk Museum Tractor!

Students and Young Farmers Take Over Sunday

Sunday 27th March 2011 will see the museum run by students from Lady Lumleys for the Tractor Run and Fun Day. The day will help raise money for the Harrison Development Project. Details of the event are on the website and Kev will be serving his famous barbeque sausages in buns. There'll be face painting, crafts, demonstrations and lots more. Tractor Runners will also be treated to a pie n pea supper after the run.

Maud and Emma's Blog

Hi I am Maud a french volunteer, and I am spending two weeks at the Ryedale Folk Museum.
The ryedale folk museum accepted to welcome me during my trip in the goal of meeting people to practise my english and of course discover the museum and the history.
So the first day Emma presented me to the staff and the volumteers. Then before we opened, Emma and Willow showed me the museum and tried to explain a little the role of the different buildings. We have even given a french name for the chickens: Poulet and Polo...
After this visit, Emma taught me a typical activity. This was how to Rag Rug. I have learnt that Rag Rugging was a really important job and I found it rather easy to follow but it's because Emma was a patient teacher.
We have used these fabrics yesterday to make rag rugs, it was funny and easier than I thought.
After these days spent in the museum I think that the museum is a place very interesting to see the different ways of living in the past and to have the impresion to travel through the history. So I'm very lucky to be in this museum because the people are very passionate about the museum and they take the time to explain me their hobbies / jobs so to finish I can say to them " A Big Thank you to everybody " and of course to Emma to spend time with me during these two weeks. so bye bye and I hope to see you soon :)

To begin with I want to say a massive welcome to Maud. She had been absolutely fantastic these past few days. She has been a great help and I have to say her English is amazing. My french isn't as good now but I still know how to have a conversation. (BONJOUR TOUT LE MONDE!!!) I really enjoyed spending time with Maud, she is a really kind and funny person. I will need to see her in France one day.
I have learnt a lot from Maud and she has learnt a lot of english phrases and sentences from us which is great in my opinion. I think this has been one of my best weeks because it is good to use the french language once again and I have had lots of fun. It isn't going to be the same without Maud. So we are so going to make the most of it. I may take Maud out for something to eat. Fish and Chips anyone!!!
Overall I have had a great time getting to know Maud and I am sure she will come back and visit.

Hey everyone,

It has been rather busy here at Ryedale Folk Museum. We have had our free Valentine's event and that was fantastic. I really had a good time and i'm sure all the visitors had fun too. Considering the coldish weather we managed to get over 400 visitors.
Mark and I were cooking in Stang End and that was good because we had the fire to keep us warm!!!
My mum and sister also came along and they were in the Sweet Shop. They also had a good time because they were able to speak to the customers and also get to know other volunteers.
Overall I found this day really enjoyable because there were enough activities for everyone and we all had a good time.

Last week Mike, Mark and myself went to the York Art Gallery. I found this visit interesting because we were able to speak to other people who work in the museum business and also we saw David Hockney's amazing picture 'Bigger trees near warter.'
Sir Nicholas Serota, director of the Tate museum in London was also at the gallery. I felt really privileged to be there because its not everyday you go to an Art Gallery and see the director of a fantastic museum in London!! Yes it was a really good day.

Matthew Cundall from the University of Leeds blogs about new resources he’s created for the museum

When Raymond Hayes died in 2000, it closed the book on a chapter of Ryedale life.

For nearly 90 years, Raymond had a front row seat in the life of Hutton-le-Hole. As the local photographer and later as a prominent archaeologist, he saw the village change forever. Before his eyes, generations came and went.

His photographic studio, now an exhibit here, has allowed visitors to see the objects which surrounded his life.

But these objects can’t tell us what he thought about the times in which he lived. What did Raymond’s generation think about the impact of rising house prices, depopulation and increased tourism? How did he react to the closure of the local school and the outbreak of the Second World War? How did they speak?

Eleven years after his death, we can help answer these questions. Thanks to a new partnership between Ryedale Folk Museum and the School of English at the University of Leeds, we’re making public the lost voices of the past.

In 1976, Raymond was asked about a range of topics by a University of Leeds researcher. The recording they made that day is fascinating. It tells you something about our society that no history textbook could. You can listen to excerpts from it below, included in a digistory I’ve made for the museum.

Two years ago, the university asked me to come up with ideas for making one of its research archives accessible to museum visitors. My work was to form part of a pilot study for the ‘Language, History, Place’ project. The digistory forms just part of my work with Ryedale and the Dales Countryside Museum in Hawes.

Over the next few years, the University of Leeds and museums like Ryedale will be creating new exhibits based on the Leeds Archive of Vernacular Culture. A treasure trove of sound recordings, word maps and articles, the archive is kept in the confines of the Special Collections section of the university’s library.

I’m just the first of the many students who will work on this project over the next few years. They, like me, will focus not only on the recordings of Raymond Hayes, but also on other fascinating topics, like local folklore and dialect.

Some of the results of my work can be found in the museum café. There, on display is a selection of the results from a remarkable study into the language of dairy farming. Started forty years ago, it lay unfinished until 2010, when I set to work on compiling and mapping the responses for the museum.

The results show the enormous dialect variation in Ryedale and Yorkshire as a whole. Importantly for the University of Leeds, they add to the university’s extensive knowledge of local dialects.

Ryedale Folk Museum is busy as ever preparing for the new season. Digging has begun on the service trenches for phase one of the new development project. Some photos of the work are below as well as a few snaps of Ryedale Folk Museum staff hard at work re-decorating the office and shop. The Museum re-opens to the public on January 16th we look forward to welcoming back visitors and friends!

Official Opening of the Model Village

On Friday 19th November the model village at Ryedale Folk Museum was officially declared complete and open! The volunteers have worked on restoring the village since its arrival in 2008. Hey everyone!

This week I have been celebrating because on Tuesday 9th November that marked my one year anniversary at the museum!!!
Seriously, how fast as this year gone?!
I can't believe how much I have done in one year. I have done Front of House, delivered sessions to school groups, been to a few conferences and certainly lots more.
I would like to thank all the members of staff and the volunteers who work at the museum. They have gave me a lot of support over the past 12 months.
So I am in my final year but I don't need to go to college because that is all completed now. I only need to gather evidence for my portfolio. I will soon need to think about what I would like to do after my Apprenticeship because last year went really fast and I have a sneaky feeling that this year will go just as fast.

McCain Potato Story Bus Donated to Museum

McCains have donated the Potato Story bus to the Museum. It Arrived on site on Saturday 23rd October and can be seen and visited in the orchard on site. The Museum is very excited and grateful to have the routemaster double decker and it has huge potential for future use.

Hey everyone!!!

Its October! Nearly Halloween!!! We are in for a spooky night at the museum. Make sure you get yourself up because its going to be a great night. Certainly a great opportunity to get dressed up.
I am really looking forward to it.
I can't believe my interview was on Halloween last year. I feel as though I have been at the museum for a lifetime.

Next week Rolf from college is coming to do an observation and he will also be talking to Marky Mark and Little Richard. That should be good because Rolf says that I need an observation with me doing a session with a school and funnily enough there is a school on Tuesday so that is the perfect opportunity for an observation.

Earl of Feversham Costume Display

The Manor House is currently housing a display of court dress worn by the Earl of Feversham (1906 - 1963). The Earl served as Lord in Waiting at the courts of King George V and Edward VIII between the years 1934-1936 until Edward's abdication.

The Display has been put together by volunteers from the costume department at the Museum.

Hey Everyone!

Last week Mike and I travelled down to Birmingham for an Apprenticeship Conference.

Before Mike came to collect me I was sat watching the Jeremy Kyle Show. (BEST DAY TIME TV!!!) It was about 10.30am so I turned the TV off and I got myself ready. I then looked out of the window and I saw a red car outside. I was like... nice Birmingham here we come!!!
When we were sat in the car Mike said 'Don't say: Are we there yet?'
We had been travelling for about one hour and a half so we stopped off somewhere for something to eat as we felt rather hungry. We went to Burger King. After we had eaten we had to get some petrol, but we had forgot to get some when we came out and Mike only realised when we were driving on the motorway. We didn't have enough petrol to get us to the next services place so we had to go back to the place where we had just eaten. At this point Mike called himself a muppet!!!
After we had got the petrol we were on our way again. We were driving past Sheffield and I got a text message on my phone and it was from my mum. She said: Are you nearly there? Then I said: No we are just going past Sheffield. Then my mum said: Ooh is Meatloaf there? She asked this because we are going to see Meatloaf himself in December at Sheffield. CAN'T WAIT!!!
A couple of hours later we managed to get into Birmingham. It was rather busy. We wanted to see if we could find our hotel at about 2' 0 clock but we seemed to have got lost finding it. There was someone walking so we pulled over and said: Excuse me, could you tell us where to find Waterloo Street. Premier Inn Hotel.
A few minutes later we had found our hotel but there was no parking spaces. So Mike pulled up outside the hotel and asked the receptionist the best place to park the car. On the way here we drove past a multi story car park so we went in assuming we were able to park over night. We went to see the parking attendant person and Mike asked him: Can we park here over night? He said: No. (Mike does a great impression of him by the way.) The man said nothing else.
So when Mike came out of the hotel we looked at the car park list and you wouldn't believe it but there was the car park which we went in on the list so we just stayed overnight in the car park where we had just came from.
At this time it was about 14.50pm. We got checked into the hotel and I just laid flat out on the bed. Talk about comfy beds!!! While I was sitting in my room I rang my family up saying that we had got down to Birmingham safely. While I was talking to them I was trying to put the tele on but I couldn't. I was like it can't be rocket science but a few hard minutes I managed to get it working. It got to about 16.55pm so Mike and I went down to meet a lady who Mike knows. Sam the person who we met had an interview that day and she got it. We said CONGRATULATIONS!!! So we went out for something to eat at an Indian place. I was allowed to have a couple of vodka cocktails but I wasn't allowed to get too drunk because I would be hung over the next morning. After we had eaten Sam took us to a Jazz club in town. That was good to experience because I had never been to a Jazz band before.
It was about 11.00pm. I went into my room, got my pyjamas on and went straight to bed. The next morning I woke up at about 7.15am. I got dressed and then I got all my stuff packed and ready to be taken to the car. Mike and I went down for breakfast. I had a big bowl of porridge and Mike had the good old full english breakfast. (I really can't stand full english breakfasts!!!) After breakfast we took all the stuff to the car and then we went to find the place where the conference took place. It was only about 9.00am and the conference didn't start till 10am - 10.30am but we still went in and we did some finishing touches to our presentation. 10.30am came round very quickly and the conference had started. I think I ate too much the night before because I felt really sick or it might have been just nerves. Our talk wasn't until after lunch so that gave us enough time just in case we wanted to change our presentation slightly and I also had enough time to chill out a bit. After lunch there was a couple more speakers before our talk and I was really relaxed now. A bit nervous but I was really excited at the same time. It finally got to 14.25pm. It was our turn!!! Mike went up first to do his talk and go through the presentation. Before giving the talk Mike managed to get his joke in. 'What's the difference between a camera and a sock?' Mike talked about the Apprentices and giving the opportunity to young people. He also talked about what its like to work with young people. A few slides on it had got to my radio speech. This is the one I recorded at Minster FM talking about our May Day event. At the end of that everyone applauded and said well done!!! I wrapped up the conference by doing my speech as I was the final speaker. I talked about what the apprenticeship has done to me, what jobs I do and I finished off with a bit of a twist. I said to them all: 'If anyone has any dreams they wish to follow, I say go for it because you only live once and there is the whole wide world out there. Don't let anything or anyone stop you. When I had finished my speech people applauded and said well done. That is a great way to end the conference. Also a woman came to see me and she said: I have come to shake your hand and say thank you very much. You have really inspired me. I was smiling so much because I can't believe I had gone down to Birmingham and do a speech in front of lots of other really important people. It was just amazing. I thank Mike and everyone else who works at the museum for giving me this chance to be myself and they have given me so much support. So thank you Ryedale Folk Museum!!! If anyone would like to ask any questions feel free. I will do my best to answer them for you.

On Wednesday 1st September staff and volunteers hooped 3 wheels using traditional methods, following a successful wheel hoop earlier in the year. The vintage binder (circa 1870) can now be fully restored. There are two videos below of the days events. The event was also attended by a master wheelwright Phillip Gregson and his two apprentices Charlotte and John. Phillip had seen the previous wheel hoop video on youtube and came a long way to see the rest done! Thanks to all who took part and spectated.

Hey everyone!!!

Its the last week of the summer holidays. Where has it gone?!

Considering the cold Bank Holiday we had quite a good couple of days. This was when Rosa Mundi - Medieval Re enactors, came to the Museum. It was great fun working when they were here. As mentioned the weather was terrible!!!

Also it is great to have the two new apprentices starting. Always good to have a couple pairs of extra hands. I know that they are both going to be fantastic.

Autumn is nearly upon us. Sunday 5th September is our Harvest day. So come on up for a memorable day.

Hey everyone!!!

Half way through summer. Can you believe it!!!
For me this has been one of my greatest summers and I would like to thank everyone who volunteers here and all the members of staff who work here too!

I have done quite a lot recently. For example: I have been rag rugging in the cottages, I have been in the warm seating area and I have also been helping Wendy Simms with her craft activity. (WHAT A BUSY SUMMER!!!)

Cottage Cooking week is also on next week. I said that I would do some cooking in Stang End. Hope it doesn't end in disaster!!!

Well I hope everyone has had a fantastic summer and I will see you all a bit later.

There Be Pirates Perform in The Manor House

California based band 'There Be Pirates' put on a stirring performance at the museum on Sunday. Visitors packed out the Manor House to see and hear the pirates' music performed, and to take part themselves, children of visitors were encouraged to provide backing music as drums and maracas were distributed among the audience. Below is a video of some of the show (sound quality is not great but it gives an idea of the fun) as well as some photographs of the Pirate band.

Saddlery at the Museum

New volunteer and saddler Kieran has been at the museum this week giving demonstrations of his work and making various leather items. Many belts were made for eager staff and visitors as well as stirrup leathers and other items. The video below shows Kieran at work in the saddlery, busy making a beautiful leather belt.

Bal Musette - French Dancing at the Museum

What is a Bal Musette?
Bal-musette is a style of French music and dance that first emerged in Paris in the 1880s and was hugely popular through the Thirties, Forties and Fifties, but lost out to the Rock and Pop invasion (originating in Britain and America) in the Sixties. It is now enjoying a revival as people rediscover this uniquely French culture.

Industrial Paris was the melting-pot: there were large numbers of migrants from the Auvergne (the middle of France), and also many Italian workers. The Auvergnats brought a type of bagpipe called a musette, and a dance called La Bourrée. The Italians came with their own styles and with their accordions. As the music developed in complexity, the accordion became the chief instrument, accompanied by banjo or guitar, bass, saxophone and drums. Musette was enriched by swing and jazz influences during and after the Second World War.

Some of the dance establishments were very seedy! The musicians, for their own protection, climbed into a gallery, and the ladder was removed for the evening! The “Bal Musette” at Ryedale Folk Museum will be a far more salubrious affair, and suitable for all the family!

To accommodate more dancers on a crowded floor, compact, rather intimate versions of the dances emerged. There was the Tango, imported from Argentina, the Paso Doble, which is a Two-Step danced to Spanish music, the Valse Musette, which is about twice as fast as an English Ballroom Waltz, and finally the Java, which developed in Thirties Paris, with a novel rhythmic feel and very compact, intimate dance steps!

By 1945, the bal-musette became the most popular style of dance in France and its biggest stars were famous across the country. It went into decline in the Sixties, but is coming back, especially in larger cities, and a modern form of the musette is establishing itself.

Following the success of Saturdays Bal Musette at Ryedale Folk Museum, it may become a yearly event, see you next year! Have a look at the video to see and hear some of the celebrations.

Hey everyone!

Summer is finally here. I am taking my weeks holiday next week. Can't wait!!! Of course I am going to miss working at the museum but I shall be back before you know it.

I have had another busy week. On Monday my tutor from college came. That went really well because we managed to get lots of things completed. On Tuesday David and myself went to college for the last time before summer. This was also good because we completed all the work needed and we just had lots of fun. We thought as it was our last time at college, we decided to go to the cinema.

On Wednesday I was on front of house for a bit and I was also helping Emma and Wendy with a summer craft which will be taking place over the holidays. (Believe me its going to be fantastic!!!)

Thursday I was in Fat Betty's for a while again helping with the summer craft. I also started to do the signs for the Pirate event.

Today Emma and I have been to Kirbymoorside school for most of the day and there we did three science challenges which involved getting rather sticky. The three activities were making a tower out of marshmallows and spaghetti, making something which holds an egg and then trying them by dropping them on the floor to see if they would crack and the last activity was to learn how to juggle. No way am I an expert at juggling. However the main thing is that we all had fun!!!

After a long night Edd awoke to a wonderful smell in the air. "What is this" he thought to himself. Adam had got up early to start making fresh bread. Adam was a superb chef and had considered going into the restaurant business. After a good breakfast of bread and ale Edd was ready to start his morning business.

Unfortunately Edd had been round to Mike's the night before and had eaten some dodgy chicken pie and so the morning business took longer than usual.

After hearing Edd shouting Adam decides to make him something that will cheer him up. Adam decides a hat would be the best thing to cheer Edd up so he set to making the perfect hat. to do this Adam needed to use the loom and spinning machines.After a traumatic ordeal Edd finally arrived back at the house. he was very surprised to see a new hat waiting for him. He loved the style of the hat although there was a little problem, it didn't fit over his Afro. Never the less the morning chores had to be done. Adam headed off to the cowshed to milk the cows whilst Edd stayed and swept the floor.

Next Adam went off for his morning lessons about how to keep chickens efficiently. After a long boring morning at school Lieutenant Colonel Parker turned up to tell Adam about a life in the army.

Adam was amazed by some of the things Parker had said and couldn't wait to join. Adam ran home as fast as he could and told Edd about Parker but Edd was having none of it, He wouldn't let Adam join the army and that was that.

Next Adam and Edd went house shopping, the first house they saw was perfect, except the currant occupant was a witch, who refused to leave, and then turned Edd into a Giant! The witch controlled all of Edd's movements and they began attacking houses but then Doris the gardener came along and hit the witch with some compost and all was well again. The houses were now to small for him to fit. Fortunately his size was only temporary, and soon he and Adam were back looking at houses. However this one did need a lot of work doing to it, which Edd was not prepared to do.

They decided to keep looking.

The next house was brilliant! It had lots of room for both Edd and Adam and their activities. However, Edd had gotten lost in the maze and could not find his way too the house. Although he did stumble across one which suited him perfectly! He even found a horse that could move him from place to place.

Adam wanted a pig for his garden to fatten up for summer, he saw a lovely runt in a field and stole it.

He made a big mistake and was taken off by the men of the law to the local stock were locals

threw cabbage and tomatoes at him. Edd came home late and soon saw what had happened, he needed to dispose of the pig and so ate it whole, what a hero indeed.

Work Experience at Ryedale Folk Museum - Edd and Adam

Day One, Monday 12th July
Arriving at the museum we did not know what too expect however we were greeted very warmly by everyone here at the centre. Too start things off Helen gave us a quick whistle stop tour of all the exhibits and showed us her knowledge of each historical subject. Edd especially liked seeing all the animals around the museum.
After this we were shown how to catalogue all of the items that entered the museum, this process took time to accurately log the information required in the system. The information needed for each item included; identification, production, physical characteristics, inscriptions and markings, reproduction, condition, acquisition, ownership and last but not least location. After having a go ourselves, Helen then showed us both where items not currently on display were stored, we couldn't believe how many items the museum had that were stored.
A lady then came to the museum interested in borrowing some iron age artifacts. We were then shown the archeology store, which had a number of different iron age items, including an antler which had been modified for digging purposes and a perfect Beehive hand and quern stone commonly used by Romans for grinding corn.

Day Two, Tuesday 13th July
Arriving at the museum at 8:30 Emma issued us with the days main task, this involved ferrying school children from the centre to the village hall and then helping out with the different activities happening there. These activities included; science in your lunchbox which looked at different aspects of food including glucose free bread, how to make cheese and the effects on leaving fruit out. An archaeological activity run by people from the national park, this involved finding and taking care of fossils and how to stay safe whilst doing this. The final activity was one for Railway safety, presented by the national railway museum which looked at young peoples views on the railway and how to stay safe on the railway.

Day Three, Wednesday 14th July
On Wednesday Adam was attending a university open day so i was on my own. The first job of the day was to help Emma and Barbra open and setup Fat Betty's. after this i went to help the other Emma in the education centre. There i had to restock packs for school children to use when they come to the center. After this i helped make some face masks for a children's activity day in summer. In the afternoon i was asked to run fat Betty's for a while, whilst doing this i got talking to some of the customers form all over the world who were exchanging stories of times gone past. Before i went there was one last task for me to to, take Jim the dog for a walk.

Day Four, Thursday 15th July
Today was the day, the judges for the In bloom contest were to judge the museum. To start the day we swept all the stones off the paths and back to the gravel area. After we got the paths looking good we went and did some more on the archives with Helen, we had an interesting certificate to archive which was from the amalgamated society of carpenters and joiners form nearly 100 years ago it was made of card but we didn't want to damage it so we wore cotton gloves. After we had finished the records we started to take photos for a comedy blog we had been asked to make then we started making it.

Rope Making at Museum

Rope making is going to be one of many added activities taking place throughout the summer and visitors are encouraged to have a go at making their own rope to take home. Training up of rope makers is currently being carried out so if any volunteers want to learn, contact the museum.

Wow, I haven't done a blog in ages.
Recently I have been fairly busy, well... busy enough not to do a blog!

We have just received good news. And that is that we have got our new placements for another two apprentice's and they will have such a great time here. :)

I on the other hand... I have been delivering some schools. And doing other duties. such as college work and keeping the houses tidy, and doing errands. I am also helping to create a list of all the activities going on, in the summer Holidays. So look out for that!!

We had the 'Trike Rally' in today (3 - 4th July 2010) and yesterday, and they were such nice people. I was a little scared of talking to them, you know... their SKULL BANDANNAS and their LEATHER JACKETS and all their TATTOO'S and all that jazz, but when I got talking to some of them they had some really interesting stories to tell. And there bikes... well i should say trikes really hahaha, their TRIKES are amazing I couldn't imagine someone could as easily think of something so simple yet so advanced to be absolutely fascinating.

Anyway, I'll do my best to do more blogs, and hopefully see you in the museum sometime.

I have been the blacksmith here at the Ryedale Folk Museum for 45 years,in all that time, I have met people for all walks of life from Royalty to fellow blacksmiths.
